GRAND ISLAND (Neb.) — The Islander Marching Band is headed to the nation’s capital this summer and is set to appear on national television.  As part of the National Independence Day festivities, the performing group from Grand Island Senior High (GISH) will be participating in the annual 4th of July parade marching through downtown Washington D.C.

80 GISH Marching Band members will be making the trip to the annual celebration and performance.  Taking off on July 1st, the Islanders will be traveling with parent chaperones and band directors, and will be one of the featured high school bands in the national parade airing live on C-SPAN.

“The GISH Band is proud to represent our community in this prestigious event.” Dr. Evan Lee, GISH Band Director, shared. “Our band members have met for rehearsals over their summer break to prepare for the event and are very excited to perform for such a large audience.”

Rounding out the summer trip will be noteworthy moments of educational opportunity.  The GISH students will take a tour of the capital building, participate in the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, and explore many of the iconic monuments.

The highlight of the trip will be the Islanders’ appearance in the National Independence Day Parade.

Per the official parade website (july4thparade.com), America’s National Independence Day Parade takes place annually on July 4th at 10:30 am in Washington, D.C. before an audience of thousands of spectators. The Parade consists of invited bands, fife and drum corps, floats, military and specialty units, giant balloons, equestrian, drill teams, VIP’s, national dignitaries, and celebrity participants. The Parade is a major national event that seeks to draw the attention of Americans to the real meaning of the holiday.

Proudly representing Nebraska and the community of Grand Island, the GISH Marching Band was selected to be one of the featured high school groups to perform.

“It takes a lot of preparation to participate in an event like this.” Dr. Lee continued, “Our band is thankful for the support from our band families, the GIPS administration, and our community through countless fundraisers and events to help us get to D.C.”

Friends, families, and the good folks of Grand Island are invited to watch Islanders in the national parade on C-SPAN, the FOX Local App, or the official parade website.

As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, Grand Islanders may bring an extra layer of pride to the celebration knowing that Grand Island Senior High will represent us well.

Matt Fisher, GIPS Superintendent, applauded the recognition and opportunity for the GISH Marching Band.

“Having the GISH band selected to be a part of this historic event is a real source of pride for the Grand Island Public Schools district and for the city of Grand Island.” Mr. Fisher affirmed.  “Getting to be a part of celebrating our nation's 250th birthday in this way will be something these students will cherish throughout their lives.”
