Wildcat Basketball splits in Wood River

It was a wild night of Basketball in Wood River for the St. Paul Basketball Teams. In Girl's action St. Paul got off to a slow start finding themselves down 8-2 in the first quarter before outscoring the Eagles 12-3 to take a 14-11 first quarter lead. The Cats stayed red hot in the 2nd between Charlee & Addy Wegner, Zaya Lewis and Aubree Fitzgerald outscoring Wood River 17-7 in the 2nd quarter going into the half up 31-18. At that point the Cats outscoring Wood River 29-10 since trailing 8-2 in the first.

The Eagles came storming back in the 2nd half with Charlee Wegner taken out by a bloody nose towards the end of the 3rd quarter. Wood River closed out the 3rd quarter with a 17-12 3rd quarter to cut the deficit down to 8 at 43-35 St. Paul heading into the final frame of play. The Eagles got off to a quickstart into the 4th getting anywhere from 2-5 points from St. Paul's lead. The Cats would force some late turnovers in the end and some smart basketball towards the end, the Wildcats ran out the clock enroute to a 54-52 victory avenging their Lou Platte Conference Final loss from last year.

Zaya Lewis earns Runza MVP honors scoring 8 points and some key assists towards the end in the Victory. The Cats now 3-0 for the first time since 2021

The Boy's action saw St. Paul Wipe an 8-2 deficit to take a 9-8 lead but the Eagles found a late basket before time expired to take a 10-9 lead in to the 2nd quarter. The 2 teams exchanged buckets back and forth in a 33 combined point 2nd quarter with Wood River edging the Cats 17-16 to take a 27-25 lead at the Half.

The Eagles struck a 15-2 advantage in the 3rd quarter behind the rebounding of Madden Brabec and the 3 point shooting of Anthony Rindone to take a 42-27 lead. The Eagles paced out the 4th quarter 7-6 to take a 49-33 win over St. Paul.

The Cats fall to 1-2 on the season. Joe Shafer takes Runza MVP honors for St. Paul.

Next action for both Wildcat teams will be Tuesday 12/17 at Home vs Adams Central.
