South Street in Hastings to Remain Close

South Street between Lincoln and Hastings Avenues will have to remain closed until the asphalt street is replaced with concrete, likely completed in September, following a water main break in June.

The damaged water main was replaced, and service was restored, the day of the break – June 23. Curb and gutter removal was then completed by Utility Department underground construction crews. The curb and gutter replacement was completed by contractors on July 10.

The Engineering and Streets Departments hoped the block could reopen to traffic until construction began, but there are numerous defects in the brick and asphalt street following the water main break that could cause the street to fall apart if it was opened to traffic.

Due to the condition of the street, the block of brick and asphalt street will be replaced with 9-inch concrete paving.

The bidding process is currently open for concrete paving on that block. The City of Hastings published the request for proposals on Wednesday, July 15. Bid proposals will be opened on Wednesday, July 29.

The requested completion date is Sept. 1, depending on contractor availability.

The Lincoln and Hastings Avenue intersections will remain open across South Street. Traffic will continue to be detoured using Lincoln Avenue, Hastings Avenue and B Street.
