Skutt Catholic defeats Northwest In Omaha
(Omaha, NE) - A late deficit and missed chances was the story of the game for the Northwest Vikings Friday night falling a Skutt Catholic 20-16. The two teams were meeting in week two of the season looking for their first win. Skutt lost week one to Bennington, Northwest to Aurora. The first quarter of the game between the Skyhawks and Vikings would see the two teams trade possessions but both would come up empty in a scoreless game headed to the second quarter. Skutt would miss 42-yard and 38-yard field goal attempts in the first and second quarters. The Viking's special teams in punt formation would come back to bite them for the second week in a row. In week one at Aurora, the Vikings had two punt attempts that ended in a block and then tackled for a loss/turnover on downs.
In the second quarter vs Skutt, Northwest would have a tricky snap back to Peyton Attwood that would result in getting tackled for a turnover on downs. Skutt would score off of that miscue by the Vikings on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Holtam to Connolly to make 7-0 Skyhawks. The Vikings would answer just before halftime with a 21-yard field goal attempt by Attwood to make it 7-3 at halftime. Skutt would tack on two 3rd quarter scores to make it 21-3 with 1:31 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The Vikings would try to make the furious comeback in the 4th quarter having the ball four different times but only scoring twice. Austin Payne would throw a 10-yard TD pass to Alex Korte with 11:15 left in the game. Northwest would try to score again later be only would be stopped at the one-inch line after a fourth and goal pass attempt to Tegan Lemkau, who would catch the ball but only would be tackled short of the goal line. The Viking defense would force a stop giving Northwest the ball back to march down the field with the help of a 15-yard personnel foul penalty on Skutt Catholic to score a touchdown on a 31-yard pass from Austin Payne to Alex Korte with 1:14 remaining in the game to make it 21-16 Skutt Catholic. The Vikings would then try the onside kick that was perfectly executed by Atwood who got the ball to bounce after the kick went over the Skutt Catholic hands team. Joe Stein attempted to leap up and grab the ball but was deflected out of bounds ending the game in victory formation for the Skyhawks.
