Grand Island Five Points Roundabout To Open This Friday

(Grand Island, NE) - The City of Grand Island Public Works Department is announcing the Five Points Intersection is scheduled to be open to traffic on Friday, September 29, 2023. The Five Points Intersection Improvement Project constructed a roundabout at the intersection of Broadwell Avenue, State Street and Eddy Street (Five Points). The limits of roadway reconstruction along Broadwell Avenue began approximately 300 feet south of the intersection with State Street and extended to approximately 450 feet north of the intersection. A steel pole and mast arm for overhead guide signs were placed approximately 1,550 feet north of the intersection. The limits of reconstruction along State Street began approximately 300 feet west of the intersection with Broadwell Avenue and extended to approximately 400 feet east of the intersection. The limits of reconstruction along Eddy Street began approximately 350 feet southeast of the intersection with State Street and extended to the intersection. The project also included storm sewer construction, water main construction, sanitary sewer construction, sidewalk improvements, and new streetlights.

Working day contract with Diamond Engineering Company will expire on Monday, October 2, 2023; however, the contractor has scheduled the intersection to be open the Friday before.

On October 11, 2022, City Council approved the concurrence of bid award to The Diamond Engineering Company of Grand Island, Nebraska for $2,929,887.08. The total project cost is $4,102,315.01 and included preliminary engineering, environmental (NEPA) approval, right-of-way acquisition and construction engineering. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is funding $2,640,000.00 and the City of Grand Island is funding the remaining $1,462,315.01. FHWA funding was through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Local Project Division oversaw design and planning activities for the project. NDOT District 4 Office in Grand Island oversaw the construction phase. Olsson provided preliminary engineering, NEPA approval and construction engineering for the project.

Mayor Roger Steele commends the state, federal and local partnership that has made it possible to build these improvements to the Five Points intersection. Mayor Steele stated, “The newly constructed roundabout will lessen traffic congestion at the intersection and enhance the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike.” He adds, “The traveling public’s safety guided all steps of this project, from design through construction and will revitalize the area and encourage economic growth and development. Congratulations to all parties for completing this important project early and on budget!”
