GI Home Federal knocks off Hastings for the A7 Championship
(Hastings, NE) - In a winner take all championship on Tuesday night Grand Island Home Federal would get off to good start and have a strong finish claiming the Class A Area 7 tournament championship over Hastings Five Points Bank by a score of 7-2 at Duncan Field. GI would score two runs right out of the gate on a Carson Leiting two-RBI single. Home Federal added another run in the top of the 3rd off a wild pitch scoring a runner from third to make it 3-0. Hastings would answer with two runs in the bottom of the third to make it a one-run game at 3-2. Grand Island wouldn't be done in the scoring category building some insurance with one run in the top of the fifth and three more in the top of the sixth for a 7-2 lead going into the seventh inning.
Jaden Jurgensmier had his best outing on the mound of the summer for Home Federal. Pitching a complete game on 101 pitches, giving up 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks, and 4 strikeouts against 28 Hastings batters. Jurgensmier who pitched on Friday in the 8-0 win over GI U-Save Pharmacy kept his pitch count low, only tossing 61 pitches, allowing him to come back for Tuesday's game vs Hastings.
GI Home Federal at the plate had five hits in the game getting one each from Sake, Leiting, Nesvara, Lee, and Douglas. Grand Island would have 5 RBIs in the game along with 6 walks, and 4 strikeouts.
With the win, Grand Island Home Federal is now 23-11 on the season and will travel to Bellevue East for the American Division state tournament starting this Saturday. Opponent and game time are to be announced on Wednesday. Hastings Five Points Bank with the loss is now 30-10 on the season and will head to Lincoln for the National Division state tournament.
