Trails and rangelands of Nebraska’s largest state park are again open to the public, after being closed since the South Fork Fire burned over them in recent weeks.

People are urged to use caution while enjoying this popular Pine Ridge attraction at Fort Robinson State Park. Hikers and equestrian riders should avoid areas near trees that were burned and weakened by the fire. By staying on established trails and service roads, visitors can help the landscape recover.

Park employees have been busy removing trees that pose hazards near trails and fixing fences — a task that will continue throughout the coming months. One area of focus has been the trails featured in the park’s guided horseback rides. The short horseback ride, which goes through the lowlands below the Red Cloud Buttes, returned to operation this week.

In addition to weakened trees and fenceposts, visitors should be aware of unstable ground in places. Gates may be open or missing, and fence lines should be avoided. The ash and dust from the burn scar also may hinder visibility and air quality.

As the fire burned over most of the park, responders were successful in protecting the historical buildings and structures within the main complex. The only structure to burn, other than fences, was the cookout shelter at the base of the Red Cloud Buttes.

The park is gearing up for a busy Fourth of July weekend with most services back in operation. They include historical tours, cookouts, stagecoach and pony rides, Jeep rides and the new aquatic center. The park’s lodging, restaurant, activity center and sutler store also are open.

Those with specific questions about amenity availability or conditions should call the park at 308-665-2900.
