Fire Station #3 Taking Shape, Ahead of Schedule

Grand Island, Neb. — Back on February 9, Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele announced a $4.5 million project to tear down Fire Station #3 and build an entirely new facility at its same location.

Now, in early December, that project is more than just a concept. Walls are already up on the new facility, which is ahead of schedule. Weather permitting, crews with Rogge General Contracting are planning to put on the roof on Saturday, December 7, and if there are no unforeseen setbacks, the project could be completed a month or two earlier than its original deadline of July 2025.

“We’re at the point now where there are a lot of things taking place,” Grand Island Fire Department Chief Cory Schmidt said. “I think the last time we had met, it was basically some cleared off dirt. Now we have what looks like a building, so it’s very exciting.”

The new Fire Station #3 will be located at the same location as the current facility, which is 2310 South Webb Road. Once complete, the facility will provide more space to house firefighters as well as an additional ambulance station. It will also provide the fire department the flexibility to move staff and resources around to better serve the city, which is the ultimate goal.

“This is one of those improvements that will benefit not only the public, but also our firefighters,” Schmidt said. “It’s going to incorporate a lot of modern features that our older station doesn’t have, and those features tend to improve the safety of firefighters.”

Once the new facility is complete and operable, crews will turn their focus to tearing down the current Fire Station #3. For more information, please contact Communications Manager Spencer Schubert at spencers@grand-island.com.
