Creighton Women Down St Johns 75-56
Queens, N.Y. -- The trio of Lauren Jensen, Morgan Maly and Kennedy Townsend combined for 50 points to guide Creighton Women's Basketball to a 75-56 win at St. John's on Saturday, December 28.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 10-3 on the season and 2-0 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's fell to 10-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Leading 7-5 early in the opening quarter the Bluejays took control with a 12-2 run led by five points from Townsend to bounce out to a 19-7 advantage with 4:05 remaining in the first.
Although St. John's raised the defensive intensity in the second, forcing six Bluejay turnovers, the Bluejays still extended their edge to 39-21 at halftime. The highlight of the stanza was an 8-0 run that saw Maly and Jensen connect from long range as well as a pair of free throws from Mallory Brake.
Jensen delivered seven points in the third quarter to help the Bluejays push the lead out to 22 at 51-29 with 4:45 remaining, but St. John's had one final push remaining.
The Red Storm opened the fourth quarter with a 6-1 burst to close withing 12 at 57-45 (6:56) and had multiple chances to bring the game to single digits, but Creighton's defense tightened to put the game away.
Jensen led all scorers with 23 points (10-of-18 FG), while Maly and Townsend finished with 16 and 11 points respectively. St. John's got a team-high 17 points from Lashae Dwyer and 10 from Ber'Nyah Mayo in the loss.
Creighton returns to the floor on Wednesday, January 1 as the Bluejays host Butler in D.J. Sokol Arena at 2:00 p.m.
