Cats finish runner up in C7 Subdistricts

St Paul Softball

The St. Paul Wildcats opened up postseason play Monday in the C7 Sub-District tournament in Kearney at Patriot Park. The Cats split the day winning against Hershey 10-2 in 5 innings before the Host Team Kearney Catholic won the Sub-District Crown 13-5 in 6 innings.

The Cats started off strong against Hershey with both Offense and Defense humming on all cylinders as St. Paul scored the game's first 3 runs before the panthers closed the gap at 3-1.  The 3rd inning proved to be the difference maker as the Wildcats erupted for 6 runs in the frame. Both teams wouldn't scorein the 4th before they would each split in a run in the 5th giving St. Paul the run rule of 8 runs after 5 innings to punch their ticket to the Sub-District Championships with the 10-2 victory.

The Cats hustled their way to an  early 1-0 lead behind Kami Sack, in as a courtesy runner for Charlie Wegner who walked to lead off the contest.  Stole second and forced a pair of Star Errors to bring home the speedster. Kearney Catholic answered in the bottom half of the first with 2 runs of their own to regain the lead at 2-1.

Neither team scored in the 2nd before St. Paul dropped a 2 spot in the top of the 3rd to get a small lead back at 3-2. The Cats added an insurance run in the Top of the 4th as Alli Dugan hit a solo shot to left centerfield for the 4-2 lead.

The Wildcat momentum was quickly washed away as Kearney Catholic scored 11 of the game's final 12 runs to win the Sub-District championship 13-5 in 6 innings.

The split day more then likely salvages the Wildcat season for at least 2 more games as of this writing the Cats were in 15th place in the powerpoints and a trip to Wahoo seems as the likely destination for a best of 3 with Bishop Neumann but that can always change as the powerpoints haven't officially locked yet. Keep up to date on the KRGI Social media pages to see if the Cats have one more fight left in them.
