Ballots Mailed for Grand Island Special Election

Grand Island, Nebr. – Nearly 24,000 ballots were mailed Monday to registered voters in Grand Island.

“The City of Grand Island scheduled an August 13, 2024, by-mail election for the creation of a Good Life District Economic Development program,” said Hall County Election Commissioner Tracy Overstreet. “These ballots allow Grand Island voters to weigh in on the creation of that district.”

This by-mail election is using a brand-new ballot envelope that requires more information from every voter.

“This ballot envelope complies with Nebraska’s new Voter ID law,” Overstreet said. “It requires voters to not only sign the envelope, but also provide their driver’s license or state ID number on the envelope.”

The envelope has two security seals and a privacy flap to cover the voter’s signature and Voter ID number. Those voters who do not have a driver’s license or state ID number must provide a photocopy of a different form of identification, such as a concealed carry permit, a passport, or a Nebraska college ID. Voters using a driver’s license or state ID number do not have to provide any photocopies.

A complete list of acceptable IDs can be found at the Nebraska Secretary of State’s website.

Ballot envelopes that do not have Voter ID information and a signature that matches data on file with the Hall County Election Office will be rejected.

Ballots must be returned by 5 p.m. Tuesday, August. 13 to be counted. Ballots may be mailed, hand-delivered to the Hall County Election Office or deposited in the ballot drop box at the east entrance of the Hall County Administration Building. The election office is in the Hall County Administration Building at 121 S. Pine St.
